Themes for Story Hour
Picking out Books
BRAINSTORM first. Write down all of the words you associatiate with your theme. For example if your theme is Groundhog Day, then words such as sleep, hibernation, dreams, Spring, seasons, shadows, etc. all will come to mind. Use these ideas to help come up with great books and activities that relate to your theme.

Share your stories around a CAMPFIRE (indoors)
 |
Immerse the children into the storyteller's environment by creating a mesmerizing campfire scene.
I have found that the kids love to sit around a "campfire" while I read or we all sing. This creates a very unique environment as we sit in a darkened room with the flickering of the fake flames bouncing off the children's faces. I usually use a flashlight to see the words. We use our artificial fire in October, and to breath life into our winter months.
The effect itself that we use is a self contained unit that we just put real pieces of wood around. (we just have to vacuum a little afterwards)
